FilmTec and Toray seawater membranes: data sheet values compared
This page puts the manufacturers' published values for 8-inch seawater RO elements side by side. Use it to see which FilmTec and Toray elements sit closest to each other before you ask for a quotation. All figures come from the current DuPont and Toray data sheets linked under each table.

Test conditions
Both manufacturers test these elements at 32,000 mg/L NaCl, 800 psi (55 bar), 25 °C, 8% recovery. One condition differs: DuPont tests at pH 8 and Toray at pH 7. Toray states its boron rejection at pH 8. Flow and salt rejection can therefore be compared directly; boron rejection only approximately.

Closest elements by published flow
| If the plant runs | Closest element in the other brand | Difference on the data sheet |
|---|---|---|
| FilmTec SW30XLE-440 | Toray TM820V-440 | Same flow (9,900 gpd). Minimum salt rejection 99.60% against 99.50%. |
| FilmTec SW30HRLE-440 | Toray TM820M-440 | 8,000 gpd against 7,700 gpd. Minimum salt rejection 99.65% against 99.50%; Toray states higher boron rejection. |
| FilmTec SW30HRLE-400 | Toray TM820M-400 | 7,500 gpd against 7,000 gpd. Feed spacer 28 mil against 34 mil. |
| FilmTec SW30XHR-440 | No TM800M or TM800V element at this flow | The SW30XHR-440 has the lowest flow and highest rejection in these tables (6,600 gpd, 99.82%). |
Closest by data sheet is not the same as interchangeable. A change of model or brand alters the flow distribution and pressure in the vessel. Run a projection in the manufacturer's design software, or ask your process engineer, before ordering a different element.
FilmTec SEAMAXX-440 is tested differently
DuPont tests the SEAMAXX-440 at 600 psi (41 bar), not 800 psi: 9,050 gpd (34.2 m³/d) at 99.47% stabilised salt rejection. Its data sheet also gives expected values normalised to 800 psi: 17,000 gpd (64.4 m³/d) and 99.70%. Do not compare the 600 psi figures with the tables above.

What is the same across these elements
- All are 8-inch diameter, 40-inch long spiral-wound elements.
- All have a maximum operating pressure of 1,200 psi (83 bar).
- FilmTec models ending in i (for example SW30HRLE-440i) have iLEC interlocking end caps. A vessel loaded with iLEC elements needs iLEC replacements.
What we need to quote membranes
- The installed model exactly as written on the element label.
- Quantity and, for a partial replacement, the position of the elements in the vessel.
- If you want to change model or brand: feed water analysis and operating data.
- Delivery country and address.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Toray equivalent of FilmTec SW30HRLE-440?
By published flow the closest Toray TM800 element is the TM820M-440: 7,700 gpd against 8,000 gpd at the same test pressure, salinity, temperature and recovery. The minimum salt rejection differs (99.50% against 99.65%), so confirm the change with a projection.
What is the Toray equivalent of FilmTec SW30XLE-440?
The Toray TM820V-440. Both data sheets state 9,900 gpd (37.5 m³/d) and 99.80% salt rejection at 800 psi, 32,000 mg/L NaCl, 25 °C and 8% recovery.
Can FilmTec and Toray data sheet values be compared directly?
Flow and salt rejection can, because both manufacturers test at 800 psi, 32,000 mg/L NaCl, 25 °C and 8% recovery. Boron rejection only approximately: DuPont tests at pH 8 and Toray tests at pH 7 while stating boron rejection at pH 8.
Why does SEAMAXX-440 show a lower rejection than other FilmTec seawater elements?
Because DuPont tests it at 600 psi instead of 800 psi. At 600 psi the data sheet states 99.47%; normalised to 800 psi it states 99.70%.
Can I replace a 440 ft² element with a 400 ft² element?
Physically both fit an 8-inch vessel, but the membrane area, flow and feed spacer differ, so the vessel hydraulics change. Treat it as a design change and run a projection first.
