The final drive is the planetary gear reduction assembly that connects the hydraulic travel motor to the drive sprocket. It converts the high-speed, low-torque output of the travel motor into the low-speed, high-torque drive required to move a tracked excavator. When the final drive fails — typically through seal failure and oil contamination of the planetary gears, planetary gear tooth damage or travel motor hydraulic failure — the machine loses all travel capability on the affected side and cannot be operated.
